Week 5: Reflection.


This week I have been assigned to reflect on a piece of work that I’ve done so far. For week 5, I’m reflecting on Week two’s task Problems and Stem Resolutions where I had to create a solution for a new or existing problem.

My issue was the lack of interesting robotic music players with an active user interface. I chose this idea because of the combination of the themes:

  • Physical Prototyping
  • AudioVisual Coding

A recurring theme in my work is a narrative through music, fashion (aesthetic), spirituality, visual fx, and culture through a technological perspective. I’m interested in pushing the barriers with creativity through these subjects, however, I am unsure of the name for this.

Practical improvements and adjustments:
  • Challenge the aesthetic of the robot, how can I challenge the idea of a ‘typical robot’ Something to develop, to make it unique.
  • Seeing if I can then go and recreate and sculpt this model in Blender.
  • use TouchDesigner for the visualisers, and use CAD/3D Printing/Hardware for the robot. (Which I started experimenting with last week.)
Issues I may come across:
  • Not being experienced with 3D Printing to make a physical prototype
  • Not being able to sculpt to a standard at which I would like
  • Experience with TouchDesigner
  • Having the financial ability to buy Adobe software such as After Effects.

Most of these can be fixed by experimenting and trying out the software, and financial circumstances will hopefully change over the time of this course

What does the reflection have to do with your artistry overall

This reflection shows how I need to bridge the gap between my creativity and technical skills by acquiring the required software needed for my projects. For this, I could

  • Book tutorials with technicians
  • Experiment with applications in my free time (with and without tutorials)

This will help me execute my ideas even better, to achieve the desired result.

what do you do well?

I would say I plan my ideas well, I have always loved pre and post-production, however, I would love to be able to increase my ability in the production stage, I would like the ability to be able to build upon my work to get to post-production, instead of editing a rough version of my ideas.

  • Being able to use my technical skills in the way required – This c
  • Drawing inspiration from different people and things – The best ideas usually have contrasting and similar inspirations.
  • Challenging my ideas more in the pre-production stage – to create a more unique design.
  • I would like to start incorporating the idea of play in my work, I was inspired by a book called Play by Sicart Miguel. I feel as if my inspirations do this quite well.
  • Personalising Ideas, when this is released I want them to think of me.

  • Be specific with the UI, who is the target audience? What do they look like

I worked on personifying robots, challenging how a robot should look in terms of uniqueness, by importing my culture and my identity.

In the process, I was even sketching potential logos to use in my work. I was also researching how the U.I. should look, it should be similar to a GAME menu such as Persona 4 or Devil May Cry. I try to use my external interests for my physical prototyping, and my internal interests for my digital art.

What did I like?

I liked applying the feedback to my creativity and being able to improve ideas I had into it is fitting for me as a Digital Artist. This could also be useful for other projects and exhibitions I will partake in during the upcoming years.

What didn’t I like?

Being a newbie at all this software, I wish I knew how to do it straight away, however, I should focus on one software and start exploring others afterwards.

PLANS for time:
  • Potentially 3D Printing
  • Looking into robotics and how this robot would work from a technical engineering perspective.
