Week 6: Old = New

This week, our task was to evolve or create concepts which will then become prototypes. I chose to evolve my week 2 project, further taking in feedback and challenging the idea of a robot model along with my idea of a musical robot.

I chose to challenge the aesthetic of a typical robot through my identity.

  • Black Culture
  • Soul
  • Spirituality
  • The Use of Play and Unique Items.

I chose Grillz because it is a staple in my culture(predominantly it represents power and social status and it has origins from 4000 years ago.

2000s Southern American Rappers in Grillz.

Using the concepts I created last time, I decided to head into the 3D Modelling software Blender and make a prototype, using ideas from this week’s lecture to understand and expand my work.

Process

I created the grillz from scratch, which unfortunately took up too much time. However, I did get a chance to improve my blender skills a little bit, and it taught me that even without equipment I am still resilient enough to get ideas into motion.

Final Results.

PLAY AND STOP INTERFACE ON TOUNGE.

What did I like?

I liked

  • Being able to make my idea a step closer into an actual presentable prototype. Although this it the beginning stages, it’s still cool to look at how this can develop
  • Making this on Blender, I enjoyed exercising my technical skills, even if the equipment wouldn’t allow me to develop my idea to the extent I liked.
  • Challenging my idea, seeing how I could make an initial concept have my signature on it.

What didn’t I like?

  • I spent too long making it when I could’ve gone on the internet(sorry not sorry!), I mainly wanted to showcase my concept, not blender art and I feel like I did the latter this week.
  • Having too much interruption from the equipment I was using, I had to keep replacing my Macbook because it kept running out of charge which ruined my workflow.
PLANS for time:
  • LOOK ONLINE FIRST WHEN ARTICULATING CONCEPTS
  • Research into Black culture and technology, hip hop in technology, and look at more technology. I feel like I know alot about music, fashion etc but nothing really about technology!
