Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the history of computing
- Develop an understanding of binary
- Conceptually explore the topic of computing
Introduction
This week we had to make an artwork that displayed the disruption of a binary system. For inspiration, I instantly thought of the movie Matrix, and how it reiterates the world is much deeper than what we know, in the aesthetic of sci-fi and computers.

My initial idea was to explore the binary of day and night, two settings of the world that will always remain there. But what if they were disrupted? What if a sudden emergence of the world as we don’t know were to become visible to the human. For this, I would use Touchdesigner, as I am interested in engineering visuals, sounds, cinematography and narrative.
However, my idea turned into something else, of the same wavelength.
Why keep it?
It was a merge between binary and Jesus Christ, this is a more explicit version of the day and night idea. It artistically takes on the design of Jesus Christ and the binary system, and how one day the realms of our day and night reality will be disrupted for his second coming.
I also made a short movie on Capcut to set the narrative of my binary artwork.
Production
Firstly I used stock videos to gather footage.
Then I chose to use TouchDesigner for this process, I was experimenting with different nodes and methods of making art using computational methods.

Post Production
For editing, I used Capcut and placed a narrative from a sermon that is based on the book in the bible called Ephesians, which talks about fighting more than what we can see. I used biblical and religious allusion in my work and plan to do it explicitly and implicitly for future works.
I also added some music for the ambience, I noticed that music is a very important puzzle to my work, I love setting the atmosphere for the viewer, and broadening their perspectives on reality through visuals and sounds. I am interested in my art to have depth, not just aesthetically pleasing.

Conclusion
I liked
- Making and experimenting with touchdesigner on equipment advanced enough to handle it.
- Experimenting with visualisation
- Creating a narrative behind work
- Exploring my identity through my work.
I didn’t like
- Not being able to make my original idea!
- Not developing the editing to a great standard, it’s a foundation to be built upon
Next time
- I would not leave my work till the last minute, I believe if I had time I could’ve executed my original idea properly, however sometimes you have to trust the art. Some things are stumbled on by accident, but it works for your greater good.
- Try and experiment with sound design on touch designer with YouTube tutorials and help from technicians.
